Social media is as ubiquitous as the internet itself these days. Odds are, you have an account with Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, and if you're looking for a job, probably even LinkedIn. When you apply for a job, you can expect your would-be-employer to scrutinise your social media profiles to try to get a sense of who you are. That's why if you're to get a job fast, in aged care or otherwise, it's a good idea to give your social media profiles a thorough scrubbing. Particularly your LinkedIn, since that's the one potential employers are likely to start with.
1. Make Sure Your Profile is Complete (And Relevant)
If you've ever been on a dating site, there's nothing more frustrating than when someone has an incomplete profile. It's low-effort, and it asks more questions than it answers, which is not what someone looking for a relationship wants to deal with. The same is true for talent scouts, hiring managers, and other people who are going to read over your social media profiles. So follow Monster's suggestion, and take a moment to make sure your job title is current, your experience is up-to-date, and make sure you've got a photo that actually looks like you.
2. Scrub Out Inappropriate Stuff
While we all know what a bad idea it can be to post the photos of yourself cutting loose on the weekend to social media, it's not just the obvious stuff you should be sweeping off your profile before a job hunt. You should also take a look at the messages you're sending about who you are, who you associate with, and what you talk about. Make sure your connections are all positive, and check to be sure you didn't leave a lot of negative comments about previous employers on your page. You might even want to consider getting rid of stuff that isn't job-related, like your posts about going to the gym, or photos of your breakfast. It's not bad... but if it's just noise, toss it out.
3. Join The Right Groups
If you're on LinkedIn (and to an extent Facebook), you're probably a member of user groups. These groups can be quite beneficial, providing you a place to network with others, and to get a line on opportunities. However, if you're actively looking for a new job, then you should take a hard look at the groups you're in. You might want to leave a few of them, especially if the content in them is less-than-professional.
4. Make Sure You're Easy to Contact
It's easy to focus so much on making yourself look like an ideal candidate that you forget one of the most basic things; your contact information. Make sure your contact info is front-and-center, and impossible for an employer to miss. Also, though it should go without saying, make sure the information you put in your profile originally is still valid. There's nothing worse than missing an email from a dream job because you had the wrong email address listed.
5. Check Your Spelling and Grammar
It seems basic, but sometimes it's the little stuff that trips us up. Go over your profile with a fine-toothed comb, none of those red or green lines pop up on your profile, so you need to take extra care. Then, just when you think it's perfect, have a friend or co-worker read it over as well to see what they think. More often than not it takes a fresh pair of eyes to catch the mistakes that you totally gloss over because you've been staring at the same text for an hour and a half.
Our social media profles are, for better or for worse, an advertisement of ourselves for potential employers.
